Two Mitchell’s Plain men have been arrested in connection with a home robbery in the northern suburbs, thanks to camera technology.Following the robbery, their getaway car was traced to the area with the help of an attentive operator and the local licence plate recognition (LPR) camera network.Fidelity ADT’s monitoring centre received a call from the police just after midday on Tuesday 25 July, reporting that a robbery had taken place at a home in Kommissaris Street, Welgemoed. The police passed on information about the cars that were allegedly used in the robbery, and asked the monitoring centre to search for them on the LPR network, explains Verena Hulme, district manager for the northern suburbs of Fidelity ADT.“One of our operators immediately started her search and was able to locate one of the cars in the vicinity of Westgate Mall in Mitchell’s Plain. “She shared this information with the police,” says Hulme. The police and flying squad soon caught up to the car and its two occupants at the shopping centre and arrested them. Items that had earlier allegedly been stolen were also recovered.“Well done to everyone who worked so smoothly and effortlessly in this case. Cooperation between agencies and the use of modern technology has again struck a blow against crime,” says Hulme.
