Cameras nab five ‘robbers’

Rondebosch police are warning business owners to ensure that they have a working camera system in place at all times. This follows the effective impact of cameras in the arrests of five robbery suspects on Monday 29 January. The suspects had reportedly robbed Pig & Swizzle Club in Main Road two weeks previously.

Rondebosch police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam, advises businesses to check the quality of their camera systems, as this tool was instrumental in the arrests. The suspects are being detained at the police station and are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court this week to face charges of aggravated robbery, possession of illegal firearms and possession of stolen property.

He says the robbery took place on Monday 15 January at about 02:10 when the suspects burst into the club and pulled out two firearms. They took an undisclosed amount of money and robbed patrons before tying everyone up and fleeing.

“The suspects were very aggressive and robbed the patrons of cellphones, bags and other personal items before fleeing the scene in a taxi,” explains Sisam.
