A 32-year-old man is in a stable condition after suffering head injuries and cuts and bruises when his car rolled off Chapman’s Peak this morning (28 November).

It is believed that the man had been ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over terrain and down the mountainside, the NSRI said in a statement. The man, who is believed to be from Johannesburg and now working in Cape Town, was the only occupant of the vehicle. He was located by the NSRI rescue swimmers approximately a third of the way from the roadside while the vehicle was found  about 50 meters from the water’s edge.

The NSRI Hout Bay, along with the police, Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, provincial health EMS and Cape Medical Response (CMR) responded to the scene just after 05:00.

EMS rescue paramedics descended to the scene from the roadway using high-angle safety ropes and rigging. The man was treated by rescue paramedics and when in a stable condition he was hoisted to the roadway in a specialised stretcher by the Skymed rescue helicopter before being transported to hospital.

Chapmans Peak Drive was closed to traffic during the rescue operation.

Police are investigating the accident.
