As remote jamming incidents see cases of theft out of cars increasing, the Sea Point Community Police Forum has taken proactive steps to warn motorists.
Over 10 000 flyers will be distributed to motorists and placed on cars in the area, warning drivers to remove valuables from cars and ensure they are properly locked.
Remote jamming used to be a rare occurrence. However, it is now contributing to half of the reports of theft out of cars, CPF chairperson Heather Tager explains.
“This form of theft out of cars has become rampant. The perpetrators cruise along the area waiting for a lucrative strike. They watch what is being put in the boot, then jam the remote signal and wait to see where you are going to give them enough time to simply open the boot or door of the car,” Tager explains.
“No-one suspects anything as the impression is given that they are the owners of the car and it is done so slickly. As the busy season is almost upon us and our area will have a steady stream of holidaymakers, it is imperative that they too are made aware of this modus operandi.”
The campaign looks to create awareness in a bid to reduce the ever-increasing number of thefts, Tager says.
The Sea Point City Improvement District’s cameras have contributed to identifying and arresting a few car thieves.
