Car thief caught stealing at church

2018-03-13 06:00

Manenberg police arrested a 38-year-old man last week after he attempted to steal a car in front of a church.

Manenberg police spokesperson, Captain Ian Bennett, says that “officers are working tirelessly to combat and reduce crime in the area”.

He says that numerous motor vehicle thefts took place over a period of time in the vicinity of the Heideveld Day Hospital and Emergency Centre.

“Police responded to a complaint of a stolen motor vehicle at a church in Bailey Crescent.

“Officers arrived at the church to find the suspect busy breaking into the car. He got into the stolen car and drove off,” says Bennett.

Officers chased the car and pulled it over in Duinefontein Road and arrested a 38-year-old man, who has previously been arrested for motor vehicle theft.

“Since his arrest, incidents of motor vehicle theft have stopped. He appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday 2 March and was remanded to Pollsmoor and reappeared on Friday for his bail application,” says Bennett.

In a second incident, police arrested a 26-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman for possession of stolen property and infrastructure after they were found with copper cables valued at R180 000.

Following a tip-off, officers conducted a search of an address in Laingsberg Road where they discovered cables belonging to Prasa.

Another two men, aged 28 and 36, linked to the theft of Prasa infrastructure, were also arrested and linked to the same case.

In a unrelated case, a 59-year-old man was arrested for perjury last Sunday after he opened a case of housebreaking.

“The complainant opened a case of housebreaking for investigation, complaining that his flat-screen television had been stolen at Francisca Court in Manenberg.

“Manenberg police are serious about reducing crime and they will leave no stone unturned to bring perpetrators to book,” concludes Bennett.
