Career help for residents

2015-12-01 06:00

The local ward councillor in Retreat is launching a pilot programme to improve the career prospects of residents in ward 74.

The programme is aimed to assist people with skills to further their knowledge and obtain an official qualification in the electrical and plumbing fields.

Residents who are interested in getting a certificate in their current line of work are urged to apply for the programme. They must be living in ward 72 (Elfindale, Steenberg, Retreat, Heathfield and Southfield).

Ward councillor Kevin Southgate has budgeted R200 000 of the annual ward allocation for the programme.

“Over the last couple of years many workshops were conducted for people to learn new skills or to further their knowledge. They would receive a certificate but nothing more would come of it. I would like to change that with this programme,” he says.

With the assistance of the department of social development Southgate says they would like to offer six candidates with experience but without qualifications an opportunity to undergo a recognition of prior learning (RPL) process in order to obtain a certified qualification.

The RPL process will run whilst the candidates continue to work for their current companies.

“We encourage those who are already employed in the plumbing and electrical fields to apply. They will be registered with a college or technical college and we will assist in finding them a place to complete an internship or practical exam,” he says.

Southgate says the internship would help the applicants gain further skills and knowledge.

How to apply

Anyone interested in applying must have 5 to 10 years’ experience. They must provide proof of their employment in order to prove experience.

Their highest qualification should be Grade 10 or equivalent qualification at similar academic level.

They must provide proof of residence in the area through rates account or affidavit and must have an SA ID.

Submit your CV detailing you work experience and training (if any) before Monday to Ruth Nugent at or drop it off at the Shawco building, corner of 2nd Avenue and Retreat Road. For more information call Nugent on 021 400 1178.
