Home-based carers in the Eastridge area are doing all they can to uphold the health and wellbeing of residents in need.

Their excellent work has not gone unnoticed, and this was evident when local ward 79 councillor, Solomon Philander, visited the women on Wednesday 11 April.

“The ladies are doing excellent work in assisting our seniors in the community. They visit the seniors and assist the seniors in need of aid and assist with general things. They are based at the Eastridge Community Centre and go out to various houses to assist. They appeal to the community that if they need assistance, they must not hesitate to make use of the services available,” says Philander.

The initiative is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme, developed and implemented by the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate. The programme commenced in 2014 and the community home-based caregivers are trained to provide services to seniors who are frail and/or bedridden. The project is being run in various wards in Mitchell’s Plain, including wards 78, 79 and 81. These wards were chosen as they were identified as priority wards in the area.

The primary responsibilities include:

. Identification of frail and bedridden seniors who require home-based support

. Assessment of clients’ needs

. Respite relief for family members and caregivers

. Companionship

. Reading

. Light household duties

. Referral of clients to specialist organisations for any hands-on medical support
