A request from a client to see more men in the industry has resulted in 15 male home-based carers trained.

The men trained with Domestic Bliss Training Academy from Monday 23 May to Monday 30 May and are currently completing their in-service training for two months at Beaconvale Frailcare Centre, Stikland Hospital and New Beginnings Hospital in Bellville.

The training was held by registered nurse Cornelia Martheza, who is a facilitator at the academy and a member of the ward committee for ward 76. “We looked for men to train in this field and after a while we looked at the subcouncil database for job seekers.”

A total of 15 men and four women completed the training held at the subcouncil 23 offices in Lentegeur.

Trevor Diljee, principal of Merrydale Primary School, provided the group access to their sick bay to teach the learners bed making and bed bathing.

Most of the men are from Mitchell’s Plain and will do voluntary work in the community while awaiting job opportunities.

Martheza says the trainees will receive certificates after completion of their in-service training.

The home-based carers are trained in basic nursing which includes bed care, feeding, cleaning and caring for sick and disabled patients at their homes.

“I would like to thank the subcouncil and Merrydale Primary School for allowing us to complete the training there,” says Martheza.
