Carjacker killed in mall parking

2016-02-02 06:00

It is unclear whether charges will be brought against a man who shot and killed a would-be carjacker at Promenade Mall last week.

Mitchell’s Plain police have confirmed that a criminal case has been opened for investigation.

Police are investigating several charges within one case, says spokesperson Sergeant Jerome Voegt.

“A case of murder, attempted murder and hijacking, possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition is being investigated,” he says.

“On Saturday 23 January at about 20:30 Mitchell’s Plain police attended a complaint of a hijacking at the Promenade parking area,” says Voegt.

The victim was allegedly approached by two unknown men who robbed him, taking his grey Opel Corsa bakkie and his ring.

“One suspect shot the victim in his left leg during the incident,” says Voegt.

A resident at the shopping centre came to the victim’s assistance and blocked the hijacked car.

“The suspect shot at the resident who returned fire, [killing one of them],” says Voegt.

A firearm was recovered from the deceased along with the victim’s ring.

The second suspect fled the scene and is still at large.

Police have still not identified the first suspect.

The resident who shot and killed the man was in possession of a valid, licenced firearm. He was not arrested.

“A criminal case has been opened for investigation. However, the docket has been referred to the senior public prosecutor for a decision on prosecution. With this in mind, we are not in a position to comment any further,” says Voegt.

Should the prosecutor decide not to prosecute, the murder case will be overturned and an inquest docket will replace it.

V Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the investigating officer, detective Constable Bradley Schuurman, of Mitchell’s Plain police on 082 777 8076.
