Motorists using Jakes Gerwel Drive are urged to proceed with caution, following an apparent cash-in-transit heist involving a G4S van in Hanover Park earlier today.

Captain Ian Bennett from Manenberg Police Station has confirmed the incident, saying both lanes between Weltevreden and Turfhall roads have been closed. He says information on the incident will follow shortly.

The left side of the G4S van was torn completely open by the suspects to gain entry, and police and forensic investigators are currently on the scene, which has been cordoned off, to collect evidence.

Shortly after the incident, police could be seen chasing away bystanders and motorists in the area who were trying to pick up money flying around on the scene.  Gunshots were also fired to keep the public away.

The incident follows several other heists that have occurred across the country in recent weeks. Hundreds of security guards working in the money transportation industry also protested for their safety earlier this month, calling for more visible policing and better reaction times to robberies, among other measures.

Police minister, Bheki Cele, has also since announced plans to fight the scourge of ongoing cash robberies in the country, perpetrated by dangerously armed suspects.
