Cash ‘robber’ arrested

A man has been arrested for a cash in transit heist at a Total garage in Lentegeur that happened two weeks ago.

The Hawks’ national bureau for illegal firearms control and priority violent crime unit followed up on leads and arrested the 29-year-old man last Saturday.

At around noon on Friday 6 October a G4S cash truck arrived at the garage in Highlands Drive to collect money. About four robbers allegedly confronted and threatened the guards with firearms before robbing them of an undisclosed amount of cash and one firearm.

One guard and one robber was shot and wounded as the guards returned fire before the robbers fled using a waiting getaway car, which had been stolen in Brackenfell in September.

Members of the Hawks immediately launched a manhunt for the robbers and traced the man to a local hospital where he was being treated for gunshot wounds.

He was expected back in court yesterday to face charges of armed robbery with aggravating circumstances.
