Hout Bay beach was a tapestry of colours, with flags flying and music playing softly on Saturday. Sand, buckets and spades where the order of the day as the 20th annual Hout Bay sand castle competition took place.

More people attended and took part this year and the number of businesses that took part was also more than last year.

The competition is organised by Valley Pre-Primary School to raise funds for bursaries for underprivileged children to attend the school. This year 12 children will be helped with their school needs for the next year.

Their aim for this year’s competition was to raise about R100 000 but early estimates had them sitting at R115 000.

Gareth Lowndes, event coordinator, says he was thrilled about everything. “It was a huge success.”
