Caution urged after job scam at local clinic

2016-09-27 06:00

It has come to our attention that a fake nursing sister, falsely alleging an association with the City of Cape Town’s Honeyside Clinic in Athlone, is offering residents “pre-approved” cleaner job opportunities via text message for a fee of R159.

I would like to caution members of the public against falling for scams purporting to offer jobs with the City.

One scammed resident alleges that she received a text message informing her that her job application for the position of a cleaner over weekends had been approved.

The text message also promised daily earnings of R420 per day. She was told to deposit a sum of R159 at Shoprite and to send the reference number to the fraudster. The text message said that the money was to provide the uniform and badges and that she had to report for duty the next day after depositing the money.

I would like to appeal to any members of the public who may have fallen victim to this particular scam to please open a case with the South African Police Service for appropriate action and to report it to the City for our information.

I want to urge residents to be extra vigilant when it comes to such job offers. Offers of employment with requests for payment of fees are fraudulent. The City does not charge a fee at any stage of the recruitment process, including the application, interview meeting, processing period, and training.

Any requests for such payment or information should be refused and reported immediately.
