As part of the Valentine’s Day festivities this year, the Grade 3 learners at Christel House South Africa, a non-profit school in Ottery, paid a special visit last week to Erica’s Place – a frail care facility in Silvertown, Athlone.

The learners, who all come from impoverished backgrounds, were happy to give back to the elderly in their community.

The “adopted grannies” each received their gifts of love, which included handmade heart-shaped cards, self-written poems, warm hugs, happy songs and sweet treats.

This highlights the multiplier effect of the public donations in support of the Christel House mission.

The school, which serves impoverished communities in Cape Town, continues to celebrate the words of its founder, Christel DeHaan: “To share ... to care ... to make a difference!”
