Police are on the hunt for two armed men and accomplices following a robbery at a clothing store in Vangate Mall on Thursday.

Vangate Mall management confirmed the robbery and that the Vangate Mall security team, the police and crime intelligence representatives were on site and immediately helped with the investigation.

According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, video footage shows two armed men entering Exact! at 11:15.

Norman adds the car used when the suspects fled is the same car used in a robbery of an Exact! clothing store in Zevenwacht Mall last Sunday.

Norman confirms that 30 cellphones and a undisclosed number of clothing items were stolen, but that no shots were fired nor were any injuries reported.

“Colonel Mark Adonis is requesting anyone with information regarding this matter to come forward.

Adonis is also engaging with their neighborhood watches to be vigilant whilst patrolling. Street and court committees, we appeal to you to be actively involved in the continuous fight against crime,” says Norman.

Meanwhile, customers at Vangate Mall are encouraged to immediately alert the nearest security officer in the shopping centre or report any suspicious behavior to the security office on 021 633 1065.

“Vangate Mall has implemented preventative security measures to ensure that the mall operates at an optimal safety level. We are using all measures to maintain a safe shopping environment. We would like to reassure all our customers that safety and security is our top priority,” says Vangate Mall spokesperson Gouw Waja-Stemmett.

Adonis is further appealing to the broader community to get involved in the police’s reward system.
