Central Athletics Club will host their annual 10km road race and 5km fun run at Newlands Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

The community-based club has changed things up a bit for this year’s race, according to founder member and club president, Adnaan Mohamed.

He says that most of the club’s 300-strong membership took part in the Two Oceans ultra marathon and half marathon on Saturday and will be using the run as a “recovery run”.

“Just before the race, we had a marshal’s run where we ran the route for our 10km race,” he says.

The start of the race is outside Newlands Cricket Stadium in Campground Road. This year, the first 3km of the route have changed slightly, because of the large numbers in last year’s race, which brought about congestion in and around Keurboom Park.

“We decided to change the route to accommodate the masses. Last year we had close to 4000 participants, with us expecting closer to 5000 runners this year. We then decided to go straight down Campground Road and Sandown Road until the 3km mark,” adds Mohamed.

He is excited at having a new title sponsor for the race, No Finance Cars.

“The prize money we try to spread more evenly, because we try to keep the age gaps. For example a 70-year-old runner won’t pay an entry fee, but the person winning will get R700,” he says.

“Also, something new with the 5km run – we have a 5km challenge for the schools in the area where they send their fastest 10 learners, which is also free entry, and we are going to open it up to all schools. They can send up to 10 learners. We will take the fastest five times and they will earn a prize,” explains Mohamed.

He urges all community clubs to join the race in full support and says that the water supplied to runners during the race will be sourced from off the City’s water grid.

Runners can register on the day of the race between 04:45 and 07:00 or enter online at www.topevents.co.za or at Sportsmans Warehouse branches in Rondebosch and Tyger Valley.

“There will be opportunities to enter on Friday from 14:00 to 19:00 at Groote Schuur High School. “Entry is R50 for the 10km and R30 for the 5km fun run,” concludes Mohamed.
