Mitchell’s Plain now has its own Chamber of Commerce.

On Thursday 27 October, ward 43 councillor, Elton Jansen, held a meeting inviting local business owners to get their buy-in for the concept and he has since been elected chairperson of the initiative.

The chamber was officially launched on Tuesday 13 December at the subcouncil chambers in Lentegeur.

Jansen says he is not trying to reinvent the wheel. “I looked into whether or not there was a body like this. I saw there was, but it was dissolved. There were several attempts at it and I wanted to try to make this work again,” he says.

“This is not just for one person; we all need to work together.”

Séan Achim was also instrumental in the initiative.

He says the chamber should look at promoting Mitchell’s Plain business and development and growth in the sector.

About 30 business owners from Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein attended the discussions.

“This should be a body who lobbies on your behalf,” he says.

He encouraged the business people to get involved with the initiative and look at ways to turn the economic axis and bring more business to Mitchell’s Plain.

The next meeting will be held at the chambers in January.

Achim says a CEO will need to be employed to run the chamber on a full-time basis.
