A response to the intense drive for consumers to buy on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday reminds everyone that this has always been the season of giving.

This #GivingTuesday, Learning In Reach is leading the charge. They will be placing a book in the hands of children in Lavender Hill, all while raising funds to address challenges around early childhood development in the area.

“Educated and healthy people participate in, and contribute to, the financial and social wealth of their societies,” says Leanne Reid, project director of Learning in Reach, quoting the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unicef). “Illiteracy and poverty constitute a mutually reinforcing, vicious cycle that is difficult to break.”

Learning in Reach’s Big Book Wrap Campaign launches on #GivingTuesday (today). A wrapped book will be gifted to children from preschool to senior primary level. All funds raised support Learning In Reach in their work to train teachers and parents and support quality early childhood education. Whether as an individual attending the Bubbles & Books event today, or as a corporate booking and hosting a book wrap event at its offices, there will be a way to get involved that will suit you.

Reid says this is the second year they are running this book drive. “We have loved finding children reading their books alongside the road or hearing positive feedback and appreciation from their parents. We reached 3298 new books last year, delivered to foundation-stage children at four primary schools and intermediate and senior classes at two of the schools. We would like to collect 5000 books between now and the start of the new school year, putting a book in the hands of every child at each of the four primary schools and every preschool in the area. This brings reading into the home, many of which do not contain a single book. It gives the child the key to unlock their true potential.”

As part of this Big Book Wrap Challenge, Learning In Reach is inviting everyone to join them on their book drive, supporting their local campaign to gift books and funds for the Lavender Hill primary schools and 30 preschools. Pick from their age-appropriate selection of books at the Bubbles & Books event in Plumstead and personalise your “gift of reading”.
