Thousands of residents attended an annual family fun day at The Cleeve in Portlands on Saturday.

Hosted by the Portlands Block B watch, the annual event has been steadily growing every year and coincides with Muharram (Muslim New Year). This was the 7th annual event.

This inspires a day of charity that resulted in the organisers sourcing and distributing five 500F pots of food to those in attendance.

The event started at 09:30 with the anti-drug march, followed by addresses by local councillors and ministers.

The event included round 30 stalls, with spotrs and entertainment included exhibitions by drilling squads and an anti-drug play performed by Saltan Bahu Rehabilitation Centre.

This year Galiema Ismail also wanted to treat the seniors in the area to a three course meal that included a sit down lunch.

More than 1000 plates of food and party packets were distributed to the rest of the residents who attended.

The event ran from 09:30 to 18:00 and was supported by police, disaster risk management and the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement departments among others.

Some of the block watch volunteers and police were also honoured for their service at the event.
