Hangberg Educational Trust (HET), a registered public benefit organisation, is building a quality pre-primary school and aftercare facility which will go a long way in helping children and the greater community.

The Hangberg Pre-primary School, which will operate on the property of Sentinel Primary School, has a cost of an estimated R6m. It will serve about 300 children from the area,.

If everything goes according to plan, the school is expected to be finished in September. Since July 2014, HET has been running an independent school in two classrooms on loan from Sentinel Primary School, and is already successfully caring for and teaching 60 Grade R children.

Key design elements include high security, an outside undercover play area, two toilets per class room, an outside amphitheatre, an observation room and more.

“The raised building capitalises on the scenic views and allows for the migration of sand,” says Marquerithe Schreuder from Hangberg Educational Trust.

“The elevation also makes space for the additional undercover playing area. The school has a gross construction area of 450m² plus an additional 400m² of external decks, ramps, undercover playing area and the amphitheatre,” she says.

This project was started with HET’s founded belief that in tough socio-economic environments the cycle of weak coping mechanisms and poor parenting skills cannot be broken without quality early childhood interventions. “The school will provide targeted early interventions in a properly managed and staffed environment.”

“It will include a structured, playful school day in a safe environment, proper nutrition, child health screening, child-abuse recognition, and social services referral,” explains Schreuder.
“It will also target mothers and carers through services such as parent skills training. Also, the pre-school structure will benefit the whole community as it is designed to host outdoor events using the small amphitheatre with disable friendly access to toilets and proper cooking facilities.”
Sixty percent of the required funds were donated by Rotary Club Am Kap (Sea Point) and their German Rotarian friends.
Further funds were received from companies like NG Kerk Sinode Wes-Kaap.

The HET volunteer team also arranges an annual winter dinner dance where funds are raised by auctioning donated prizes.
Although they have the ball rolling, they still need more help to complete the school on time.
“It would be wonderful if people have any prizes that they wish to donate to the annual dinner auction and raffle. All donors are thanked via our social media reach and logos are displayed on the evening.
“Any local currency donations or support with the outside play areas such as paving, tartan and planter boxes will be gratefully accepted,” says Schreuder.

Any questions concerning donations towards the completion of the school can be directed to

An international fundraising campaign was launched on Tuesday 14 June on JustGiving for the last push. The site is very simple and allows secure donations via a credit card. HET is appealing to community members to share the link ( with overseas friends and family to boost donations.
