Children that went to theatre had a nail-biting and exciting experience as the Jungle Theatre Company (JTC) artists took to the stage.

Jungle Theatre Company based in Muizenberg, in partnership with Assitej-SA, celebrated the international campaign ‘Bring a Child to the Theatre Day’ on Wednesday 20 March.

JTC was established as a non-profit organisation in 2004 aiming to inspire and empower disadvantaged children and youth to make positive changes in their lives and build a peaceful and vibrant South Africa.

The campaign saw a number of children being entertained by the artists as well as Freshlyground artist Zolani Mahola. On the day, artists hosted storytelling circles from Khoisan and isiXhosa mythology and performed the show Pythonandthe Qunube Tree. They also facilitated acting and dance workshops.

JTCs professional artistic team draws on South Africa’s diverse cultural heritage and indigenous languages to find connections to the environment and human nature, creating and performing original African children’s theatre shows that bring together music, dance, masks, puppets, clowning and storytelling.

In a statement leading up to the event, Miranda Tait manager at JTC said these performances raise awareness, inspire learning and motivate children and the youth to participate in workshops and performing arts training resulting in; developing life skills; building self-confidence and creating opportunities. “We partner with educational, social, environmental, health and arts organisations to offer our work to diverse communities in South Africa and beyond. We bring this work to underprivileged communities with financial support from the government, private trusts, foundations and individuals.”
