The doors to a new school have opened, with the first 60 children already having settled in for their first day on Thursday.

The school has enrolled to full capacity of 360 learners in Grades 1, 2 and 3, with a full staff compliment.

The school is a temporary solution while construction of the high school on the neighbouring plot is completed next year.

The school was handed over on Wednesday 17 January (“Patience bears fruit”, People’s Post, 23 January).

The school consists of nine classrooms, a kitchen, two ablution blocks, an administration block and a storage container.

The City of Cape Town-owned land was identified by ward 82 councillor, Sheval Arendse, as a site for a high school in 2010, and in November last year a decision was made to build two schools on the plot.

Western Cape Education Department district director, Glen van Harte, says the classrooms will be moved once construction of the high school is completed on the neighbouring plot.

The formal construction of the permanent primary school will then follow and is set to be completed in 2019, with the addition of another high school in Beacon Valley.
