China Town has started the Chinese New Year with a series of glorious celebrations at their stores around the Peninsula.

To celebrate the start of the Year of the Monkey they hosted a New Year’s party for over 400 guests, including all of China Town’s tenants and their families at the Chinese School in Mowbray.

Following this the celebrations continued when they invited 17 accomplished Chinese cooks to host a food festival, which was held at Sable Square over two days. This coincided with the traditional Chinese lantern festival which is celebrated by Chinese nationals worldwide.

With a variety of food from all parts of China being offered, the food festival was a tremendous success with the stallholders underestimating the demand, and many being sold out in no time.

China Town will be making this a regular feature as it would appear to have a great appeal to the people of Cape Town.

The annual blessing ceremony, which is always done shortly after the Chinese New Year, was performed at all three centres, in Parow, Sable Square and Ottery, over the weekend. This entertaining spectacle brings dragon dancers, drummers and religious icons to each centre, with each and every shop receiving a blessing for a prosperous year ahead.

Look out for more happenings at the China Town centres, which bring value to shoppers and an insight into the thriving Chinese community in Cape Town.
