Christmas marred by crime

In the week leading up to Christmas Day, Lavender Hill and surrounds were plagued by a spate of violent and devastating crimes.

. On Saturday 21 December, a shooting incident took place at 14:15 in Drury Court, Lavender Hill, where a five-year-old boy was shot and killed. It is alleged that suspects opened fire when the child was killed. The case is under investigation by Steenberg police. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

. On the same day, another shooting incident took place at 15:40 in Blagden Street, Cafda, Retreat, where a 23-year-old man was shot and killed. According to reports, unknown suspects opened fire on the victim and his friends. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

. Efforts to rid the community of illegal drug trade paid off at 00:20 on Sunday 22 December when Steenberg’s crime prevention unit arrested a 42-year-old man for being in possession of 33 Mandrax tablets, 40 packets of tik and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect was arrested in Village Heights for dealing in drugs and appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 December.
