Cigarette van robber caught in Ottery

2018-06-19 06:00

A 36-year-old man was arrested for the armed robbery of a cigarette van in Grassy Park on Tuesday 12 June.

Vigilant Vispol officers attached to Grassy Park Police Station acted on information received via police radio at 10:30 about a truck belonging to British American Tobacco being robbed in Steenberg. Grassy Park police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith, reports that cigarettes were taken and the suspects fled the scene in a grey Toyota Avanza.

“Officers, while busy with complaints and visible patrols, noticed the van fitting the description going past them in a different direction in Ottery Road. Officers also noticed the van had several carton boxes at the back of vehicle. The officers turned around and pursued the van and managed to pull it off the road on the corner of De Wet and Ottery roads,” says Kleinsmith.

Officers searched the Avanza and found seven carton boxes of cigarettes inside the vehicle.

A 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to Grassy Park Police Station for the possession of stolen goods. “This case will run together with the Steenberg armed robbery. The estimated value of the cigarettes is R70 000. It is believed that another vehicle was involved but the suspects got away. Grassy Park’s acting station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Christiaan Esau, thanked the members for their contribution in the fight against crime,” adds Kleinsmith.
