The southern Cape Flats were shaken up on Wednesday (17 May) as City of Cape Town law enforcement agencies embarked on a mass crime operation yielding several arrests, drugs and fines.

The operation conducted by Metro Police, Law Enforcement and Traffic Services saw officers clamp down on illegal activities in Lotus River, Lavender Hill, Retreat and Manenberg.

People’s Post accompanied Metro Police on the operation as they focused on known drug and gang hotspots. Officers spent the days searching the homes of gangsters and chasing several suspects who could be seen running away as soon as Metro Police vehicles were spotted in the area.

The operation caused a stir in Pieter Court in Lotus River where officers arrested a man living in a City rental unit. The man was found in possession of several packets of tik. Officers also arrested several people in a Manenberg flat shortly after sunset when they found several units of heroin hidden in the house. Residents came out of their homes to watch as police loaded the suspects in a van and told People’s Post that the home in Renoster Road was a known drug outlet.

According to the final results after the eight hour operation, the team made 19 arrests for drug-related crimes, issued 88 traffic fines, screened 120 motorists to see whether they were driving drunk, issued eight compliance notices for rental stock units and issued 13 fines for prostitution among others.

In total, officers confiscated 24 packets of tik, 53 mandrax tablets, 18 units of heroin, 114 bankies of dagga, one parcel of dagga and 106 dagga stoppe.
