It was fun and games at Belhar Indoor Sport centre when the City of Cape Town was celebrating International Children’s Day on Monday 3 June.

According to Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, 200 children from 10 city-owned Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in various areas attended. They came from areas that included Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha.

The day which is celebrated globally on 1 June is dedicated to looking at the well-being of children.

“They participated in a range of activities which included face-painting, games, puppet shows and art classes,” explained Badroodien.

He said the event focused on protecting children’s rights and promoting the well-being of children. He highlighted the fact that International Children’s Day should be a reminder that everyone has a responsibility to care for and look after children, and do all we can to create a safe environment.

Badroodien said the reason why the city chose that venue was because it is a good facility that is well looked after by the staff.

He also explained some of the city’s ECD centres in the metropole are in close proximity to Belhar and surrounding areas.

During and after the event, participants were served with foods and were given packs to carry home, Badroodien shared.

He said the City’s message to parents is to acknowledge the fact that children have a right to be cared for, looked after and have access to education within a safe environment.
