Rocklands civic centre has been closed for maintenance ahead of the upcoming state of the province address (Sopa) and opening of provincial parliament later this month.

The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department identified Rocklands civic and other facilities in need of repair at the beginning of the financial year but decided to fast-track the roof replacement following the announcement of the Sopa set to take place on Thursday 20 February.

“The department decided to bring forward the dates for the work at Rocklands civic to ensure that the venue would be ready for the Sopa,” says Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien.

“(The replacement of) Rocklands civic centre’s asbestos roof has been on the department’s plan since 2017, due to the rate of general wear and tear issues raised as the roof depreciated. During last year’s winter rains, it became apparent that the facility had to be prioritised due to the health and safety hazards caused by the leaking roof. This had been less apparent in prior years due to the drought when there was little to no rain.”

The cost of removing the asbestos roof and installation of a new roof is just shy of R2 million and is set to be completed by Monday 17 February.

“The repairs are scheduled to be completed in time for the Sopa,” says Badroodien.

However, an ongoing early childhood development programme and two events have already needed to be moved to Westridge civic centre and no bookings will be accommodated before Friday 28 February.
