Civic objects to the proposed utilities increase

2018-05-08 06:00

It is unreasonable to expect residents of the city to afford such a huge increase in rates, water, electricity, sanitation and refuse. Times are particularly tough right now with the economy at a low and the recent VAT increase. Our confidence in the city’s management of the water crisis is at an all time low. Is the whopping 27% increase for water our punishment for saving water? Increasing water tariffs is not the only solution. We call on the city to consider cost saving in other areas of the budget. This is why Logra civic further objects to the proposed pay increase of 7.1% executives, when the rest of us are fortunate to be employed may receive an inflation related increase of 3.94%. It doesn’t make sense to say we need money to manage the water crisis, that we believe you are responsible for anyway, then to give yourselves a big pay increase. A moratorium on pay hikes for the executives will save millions. In fact we struggle to understand why one family e.g. the Mayor’s family has to earn R1.2m a year when so many of our cities residents have to go to bed hungry. Local councillors must host meetings in their wards to hear residents on the difficulties we are experiencing and why these increases are unaffordable this year. Residents from all around the greater Grassy Park area attended the meeting to share views. All areas were represented. Residents encouraged each other to take action, to support each other, especially support residents from poorer communities and across the colour line. We call on residents to join hands to show their dissatisfaction. Sign petitions, stage pickets, hold street meetings.

Logra civic will meet again tonight at 19:30 at the League of Friends of the Blind (Lofob) hall in Klip Road Grassy Park.
