Civic volunteers wanted

Now that Rocklands has been reunited under one ward, locals are being called to join a new civic association.

Elections for the Rocklands Ratepayers’ Association will take place at a public meeting hosted by ward 81 councillor Daniel Christians next month.

“Rocklands was once divided between ward 81 and ward 43. The Rocklands Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association was a once an active body in the Rocklands section within ward 81. It provided leadership on all levels of engagement in local government. However, the body became dysfunctional in the early years of 2000 and was revived by myself on 11 February 2007,” says Christians.

“Due to a lack of resources, the body became dysfunctional again. It was also during 2014 that councillor Elton Jansen from ward 43, who at the time catered for one part of Rocklands, tried to established a Rocklands Ratepayers’ Association. On 22 June last year, at a public meeting in Rocklands it was decided to either revive the defunct body or call for a new structure to address issues in Rocklands.”

Christians says this is another attempt in creating a civic body.

“It is hoped that the new body will provide meaningful input in all aspects of development, be it social or economical. This body must be able to give input into the Integrated Development Plan of the City of Cape Town, promote and safeguard the interest of all residents of Rocklands, provide guidance to all projects in Rocklands including Kapteinsklip Station re-development, Mnandi Nodal development, rezoning of open spaces and sand dune removal,” says Christians.

All are welcome to stand for elections and the executive will be appointed from those who will avail themselves to lead the organisation. All interested and affected parties, including private and business sector, community based organisations, non-profit organisations, residents, community leaders and willing individuals within Rocklands, are welcome to attend.

V A public meeting will be held at the Rocklands Minor Hall on Tuesday 27 March at 19:00. Residents are urged to attend.
