Claiming UIF is ‘controlled chaos’

2016-02-16 06:00

On 4 December last year I went to register to claim UIF benefits after working for one company for 16 years. I got there at 06:00 and joined the queue outside the locked offices, as they open at 07:30, and then you have a very good chance of being attended to on the same day, as they turn everyone away at 15:30.

After many visits to the offices, by 25 January my papers were all in order and all could be registered and accepted by the UIF department. I was told on that day by the consultant that in ten working days I would receive payment. As she had requested my bank details to complete a form, which she kept, I was under the impression that on 8 February they would deposit the money into my account.

At no given time did any one of the consultants ever tell me I must come in to sign first. On 11 February I phoned to query the payment. I was told: “Your money is available, but you did not come in to sign.” So when should I have gone to sign? How would I know to go in and sign? I was told I could go in the next day (Friday) to sign, they would attend to it Monday and by Wednesday it would be available.

I am taken aback by the lack of communication. The system is controlled chaos. If I did not query this, where would the money go? These are employed people at a government department there to assist the unemployed.
