Following the success of the recent women empowerment pilot project, the free learners license initiative has been extended to women from all over Mitchell’s Plain.

The project that kicked off in January aims to empower women through enabling them to receive free drivers and learners’ license classes offered through locals.

The first round of registration took place on Thursday last week, but due to popular demand, organiser Joanie Fredericks has opened the registration for a second day.

“The classes are open to only learners classes at the moment, but is open to all women in Mitchell’s Plain. Thus far we have had seven women pass, first time and no failures,” says Fredericks.

“The initiative is about empowerment and confidence building.”

The classes are open to women aged 16 and older.

“There is no age limit for the women, but women over the age of 60 will be asked to go for a physical to ensure they are fit enough to complete the tests,” says Fredericks.

The second registration will be held on Thursday 26 April at 12:30 at the Olifantshoek Community Centre in Tafelsig.

Classes take place on Mondays from 10:00 to 12:30 and then 12:30 to 14:30, Wednesdays from 19:30 to 20:30, Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:30 and 12:30 to 14:40 and also Saturdays 16:00 to 17:30.

The initiative was piloted in Tafelsig and then extended to Eastridge and Beacon Valley before being opened to women from all over Mitchell’s Plain.
