Locals made their way to the Lansdowne Civic Centre in Church Street last Friday for the official launch of new youth-friendly services at the local clinic.

Ward councillor Mark Kleinschmidt opened the special event in the presence of City of Cape Town officials and various other representatives of the community on the day.

The services form part of the Young Women and Girls project, in partnership with the Provincial Health Department and the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, to reduce various diseases and pregnancy among young women and girls in the Cape Metro.

“To make Lansdowne Clinic more user friendly for young people to visit, an approachable and exciting programme was held to interact with youth from the community and learners from Crystal High School in Ottery,” says Kleinschmidt.

“Issues such as HIV/Aids, teenage pregnancy, youth clinical-related issues and suicides, among others, were also a concern on the day. My philosophy is that I would rather spend time and resources in preparing a child, than repairing an adult.”

Kleinschmidt says the stakeholders who made presentations and displayed information tables included representatives from the Lansdowne Library, Lansdowne Community Policing Forum (CPF), Lansdowne police and the City’s Environmental Health Department.

“An integrated approach by the aforesaid role players was imperative to engage local youth to develop a more hands-on approach and an awareness and conscious attitude to alleviate the challenges facing those (youth),” he adds.
