The Cape Natural History Club will meet at the Middle North Battery in Simon’s Town to attend the firing of the historic nine-inch muzzle loader cannon by the Cannon Society and the South African Navy.

The two organisations are expected to conduct the firing in commemoration of Freedom Day celebrated on Friday 27 April.

The countdown to the firing starts at 11:30 and guests are advised to arrive at 11:00. Warrant Officer Harry Croome will give a lecture on the day. Guests will also get a chance to visit Admiral Soderlund’s private museum and later go to a restaurant for lunch. Entry is free but donations are welcome. Proceeds will go towards the Sunflower fund.
