Coke Cup heads to end game

FC Tafelzucht, along with four former champions – Rygersdal, Woodlands United, Hanover Park and Silver Spurs – were propelled to the last 16 round of Safa Cape Town’s lucrative and popular Coca-Cola Cup.

In the much-anticipated Mitchell’s Plain derby at the Rooikraans sports complex in Grassy Park on Sunday FC Tafelzucht beat Leeds Lentegeur 1-0.

The start of the game was dominated by ZuchtPower, whose target man Sawaal Lakay (in the no. 9 jersey) had clear opportunities to score in the first 45 minutes.

However, the defence of Leeds remained solid at the back.

The Leeds goalkeeper made some good saves to keep Lakay at bay while the defence was at its best in keeping striker Lance Adams out of the game for most of the first half.

De’Heago Kleinhans, in goal for Zucht, was not that busy in the first half but in the second half Leeds shifted into attacking mode and Kleinhans had to made some good saves.

Barry Africa, manager of FC Tafelzucht, substituted Cleveland Abrahams and brought on Jason Cupido.

Then the Zucht side started to put pressure on Leeds from the right wing and the defence started to crack.

In the second half Leeds continued to use counter attacks which resulted in a dangerous header by striker Rafiq Nell, but his attempt went over the cross bar.

FC Tafelzucht grabbed what turned out to be the winning goal five minutes before full-time.

Their roving midfielder, Ebrahiem Theunissen, took a long range shot from a rebound following a mistake by the central defender.

His match winner separated the two sides – the one team he led on the victory path and the other he sent packing with his lethal boot.

Africa and his upbeat Zucht charges are on a high but if they are to continue making leeway they will have to make sure they make full use of scoring opportunities.

The ZuchtPower side are up against Manenberg-based Crystal Palace in Sunday’s last 16 encounter.

After Palace destroyed United Brothers from Nyanga 11-2, they would want to prove that their goal feast of a victory was not just a flash in the pan.

The 2006 cup holders, Rygersdal, had to rely on kicks from the penalty spot to eliminate Clover FC from the race.

The triumphant Rygersdal side defeated Clover FC 4-3 on penalties after the game ended in a 3-3 draw at the Heideveld sports complex.

Hanover Park FC, who have won the Coke Cup twice (2009 and 2012), broke the hearts of the home fans in Bonteheuwel when the “Brasse vanni Park” nailed Bluegum United 3-2.

Woodlands United (2007 champions) won the penalty shootout by a 4-2 margin after their clash with Kuils River ended 1-1.

Silver Spurs, having been 2014 champions, are in full flight and determined to bask in cup glory again after their convincing 4-1 win against Royal Chiefs.
