Newly appointed station commander of Claremont Police Station, Colonel Maree Louw, plans to work with the community to rid the precinct of crime.

She says most of the crimes happening in Claremont can be avoided.

“This is a property police station in that it mostly deals with property break-ins, which are said to be common in the area. If we continue educating our residents about how to avoid these, we could beat criminals at their own game.

“They will have nothing to steal. We need community involvement because they know where and how these things happen. We already have different stakeholders on board to help curb crime.”

She says there will also be more police visibility.

Louw advises residents who are dissatisfied with the services rendered to them by individual officers, as well as the station at large, to report to her office. She says she has found the station to have a good reputation and that she would like to maintain it through the provision of good service.

“If our officers are not doing their job, report them. We will not know if you do not come forward. We have a mandate to carry forward the good legacy of the station.”

Louw started at the station in January and says she is still getting to know the area.

She previously served as a Lieutenant Colonel at Bredasdorp Police Station for 11 years.

Louw says being stationed at Claremont has been an exciting but challenging journey for her.

“It is not easy when you come from a small town to a big city, where there are higher expectations of you. It is a process.”
