Family and about 200 Deep South residents came together at the weekend to lay a fellow resident to rest, share a prayer for him and stand in solidarity against violence.

On Wednesday 8 May, the body of a man was found in a burnt car in Ocean View. The discovery had residents crying out to local police to find the person responsible for the murder of the man. The body was identified as 38-year-old David Wolfromm, a local surfer, father and husband.

Extensive search operations held by Ocean View detectives led to the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect in Despina Way, Ocean View on Saturday 11 May.

The officers were conducting a search operation at around 22:00, searching for the suspects involved in the murder of the surfer, which led them to the house where the suspect was hiding.

They also discovered the suspect had an unlicensed firearm with six live rounds of ammunition in his possession.

He was arrested and detained at Ocean View police station on charges of murder, hijacking, malicious damage to property and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition. He appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 14 May, with the case postponed to today for a formal bail application.

Ocean View police spokesperson Sergeant Leon Fortuin says the suspect was not alone in what has been described as a hijacking-gone-wrong.

It is alleged that Wolfromm was hijacked by two suspects after surfing at Witsand and was placed in the boot of his car.

The suspect crashed into another car while on a joyride with two women.

He fled the scene of the accident but was chased by the other driver he has crashed into. After chasing them down, the driver was intimidated by the suspects and stopped following them. The suspects then fled and set the car alight shortly after.
