Comply with new ruling

The Constitutional Court has ruled on a case of expired firearm licences and permits.

In the case between the Minister of Safety and Security vs the South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association and others, the court handed down judgement on Thursday 7 June. The court maintained Sections 24 and 28 of the Firearms Control Act are constitutional and valid. The crux of this finding is that persons who failed to apply for renewal of their licences in terms of the Act are in unlawful possession of such firearms.

The court has directed that such firearms be surrendered to the police. Mitchell’s Plain area residents can hand them at the station during the week between 08:00 and 16:00.

V Enquiries can be directed to the Mitchell’s Plain Firearms, Liquor and Secondhand Goods Commander on 082 522 1282 or 021 370 1600.
