Congrats to Wynberg Boys

2018-11-13 06:00

Congratulations to Wynberg Boys High for being proactive in launching an Engineering and Design Faculty at their school. This will certainly create an interest for learners to pursue careers in the various fields of Engineering. With a number of Engineering courses being offered, at the University of Cape Town, as well as CPUT, there is certainly scope for them to pursue this interest at a tertiary level.

As Debbie Schäfer points out, technical education was stigmatised in the past.

It was also unfortunately dropped from the school syllabus by the education department. Whilst this new initiative will provide opportunities for those who want to study at graduate level, there is a far greater need for people to be trained through the TVET colleges as technicians. It is estimated that there is a need for 10 technicians to every graduate engineer.

It would therefore be appropriate for the department of education to introduce Engineering and Design courses in many more schools, particularly in the under-privileged areas.

This would help prepare people for work opportunities at support level rather than just becoming labourers at a basic skills level.
