The national crime statistics for the financial year, from April 2015 to March 2016, were released on Friday 2 September.

The stats reveal a comparison between the periods between April 2014 and March 2015 to April 2015 and March 2016.


Contact crimes decreased by almost 9% in the precinct with 1049 cases reported compared to 1149 in the previous year.

Sexual offences increased by 42.4% with 99 cases reported this year – the highest recorded number since the 2009/2010 results.

Murder cases decreased by 9.5% from the previous year’s 74 reported cases.

Common robberies increased by 8% with 130 cases reported this year.

Property-related crimes on the whole decreased by almost 13% in the precinct.

Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 179 cases in the previous year to 135 cases.

However, burglaries at residential premises increased from 262 cases to 297 this year.

Thefts out of motor vehicles decreased by 24% with 369 cases reported during the 2015/2016 year.

Under the category of crime detected as a result of police action, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from 147 cases the previous year to 122 this year.

Drug-related crimes decreased to 2 030 cases this year compared to 2 067 the previous year.

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drug charges increased by 83% with 99 cases reported this year.

Robberies at non-residential premises increased by 9.5% this year with 23 cases reported during this year compared to 21 the previous year.
