Contact crimes increase

The national crime statistics for the financial year, from April 2015 to March 2016, were released on Friday 2 September.


Contact crimes in the Steenberg precinct are up. There were 1065 cases reported for year compared to 948 the previous year.

A total of 122 attempted murders were reported compared to 79 from the previous years. There were 58 murder cases reported – an increase of 35%.

Sexual offences are up with 21%, to a total of 57.

Property related crimes show a significant improvement. A total of 750 cases were reported this year compared to 818 the previous year.

Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition increased by 56% to a total of 114 cases. Drug-related crimes are up with 375 more cases reported this year compared to 1456 from previous year. Robbery at residential premises increased from three cases to 10. There is a drop of robbery at non-residential premises, from 24 to 16 cases.


Although contact crimes on the whole increased by 14%, murder decreased by almost 7% to 27 cases, sexual offences by 5% to 58 cases and attempted murder by 69% to 16 cases.

Common assault increased to 366 cases from last year’s 286 to reach a ten year high and common robbery to 175 from last year’s 118.

Burglary at non-residential premises dropped 27% to 49 cases and burglaries at residential premises reached 610 – a decrease of 10% and the lowest since the 2006/2007 statistics.

Under the category of crimes detected as a result of police action, cases involving illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from 31 to nine cases and drug-related crimes increased 37% to 471.
