Cool breeze for library

2018-03-20 06:01

An overhaul of the air conditioning system at Central Library is in the process of being finalised by the City of Cape Town’s Library and Information Service.

Macyo member for safety, security and social services, JP Smith, says the facility is by far one of the most popular in the city because of its size and the collection of available materials, but also because of its convenient location and operating hours.

“Unfortunately, the air conditioning system has been blowing hot and cold for a number of years despite ongoing repairs and maintenance,” he says.

“To close the chapter on the challenge and improve the visitor experience to Central Library, a technical assessment was undertaken.

“The findings were that both repairs and upgrades to the existing system are required, and some components would need to be sourced from abroad.”

The Library and Information Service Department is in the process of appointing a contractor, Smith says.

“Initial indications are that the work may take at least 14 weeks to complete, with the end of June pencilled in as the date of completion, but a more detailed timeline will be available once the contractor has been appointed and the necessary parts have been acquired.

“In the interim, the department will do all it can to keep patrons cool.

“This includes keeping all the doors to the library open during operating hours and procuring portable fans to assist in keeping the interior well ventilated.”
