There has been a clash between the police and the community in St Agatha Street, Lavender Hill as the community alleges that police officers took a suspect (arrested on 21 March) to the property where the body of a woman was found on Tuesday morning.

A group of about 1000 community members took to the streets burning tyres and saying they want justice as they believe that the body of a woman found on Tuesday in a bungalow in St Agatha Street is that of 13-year-old Rene Tracy Roman who went missing on 10 March.

Captain FC van Wyk, provincial police spokesperson has confirmed that the body is that of Rene Roman.

It is alleged that Steenberg police officers took the suspect to the scene where the body was found, but community knew about this and started stoning a police van and calling for the head of the suspect.

“The community is angry. Some community members have been stoning the house where the suspect lives. The police are here protecting the house of the suspect and this angers the community.  The community is just fed up with crime,” says a community member Henry Naude.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says the 50-year-old suspect is still in custody.

According to Van Wyk, the suspect will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s court this afternoon.
