Cops arrest 59 people

Police in Woodstock are warning the public that they are warming up their crime prevention strategies to get ready for the festive season.

Woodstock police spokesperson Sergeant Hilton Malila says over the weekend they arrested 59 people for various crimes with operations running into Monday morning.

“During various crime prevention operations in the area we arrested nine suspects for possession of drugs and dagga, one for fraud, one for rape, one for possession of stolen property, two for theft out of cars, two for housebreaking, two for robbery and 20 for minor offences,” he says.

“During a multidisciplinary roadblock in Victoria Road, 21 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We also confiscated quantities of tik, dagga, unga and mandrax, as well as a substantial amount of cash during a search and seize operation in Pine Road, Woodstock. Counterfeit CDs were also confiscated during these operations.”

Malila adds that police are serious about safety leading up to the festive season.

“We want to ensure the community that this will be our approach throughout the festive season,” he says.

“There is also an appeal to residents to report all illegal activities to us. We are serious about taking action against crime.”
