No obstacle is too big for Courage Chiringa from Claremont, who strived year after year to get to university.

He finally got a place at the University of Cape Town (UCT) as a postgraduate student in Entrepreneurship.

“Thanks to everyone who realised my determination and made my dream come true,” he says.

The 26-year-old says he has always been hungry for education but the odds were against him.

After years of struggling, like the majority of people raised by a single mom working as a domestic worker, he came to South Africa from Zimbabwe and redid his high school education, which he then completed in 2013.

“I applied to varsity and got accepted, but my mom could not afford the fees. I had to take a gap year before working at a restaurant to raise funds for my education while studying at TSiBA Institute.”

It was his recent graduation that inspired him to visit all possible avenues to make it happen this time.

He has managed to raise the full amount for his tuition, R63 000, through an online crowdfunding page.

Chiringa says when he applied for the second time he knew his job as a waiter had still not allowed him to save the full amount.

Grateful to his supporters, he also promises to do the same for others one day, when he becomes a successful online marketing business owner.

“I have always had an ambition to be an entrepreneur in the marketing field one day and be an inspiration to my family and community. I am the first generation in the family to be attending tertiary education even when the odds were against me. I want to make a difference to the underprivileged as there are so many people coming from humble beginnings like mine, suffering from trauma and pain and lacking inspiration. I believe a good attitude, hard work and always looking on the brighter side of life will help one to be successful even though it might seem impossible.”
