The Kensington Community Policing Forum (CPF) says they are glad their demands for more officers at their station have finally been met.

Chairperson Mogamat Nordien says the deployment of seven officers was due to continuous campaigns they held last year.

The CPF held several public marches when Kensington and Factreton experienced increased drug abuse and gang violence. This violence saw more than five people killed in five months.

During all their marches and interventions they demanded that more permanent visible policing (vispol) officers be deployed and police visibility be increased in both communities. Their gestures were supported by hundreds of community members.

At the beginning of this month the station received one captain that was appointed as a vispol commander and seven new constables.

Kensington police spokesperson, Sergeant Angeline Grill, confirmed the deployment was in response to the CPF campaigns and she applauded them for playing a crucial role in supporting the station.

She says the presence of the new officers will benefit the station and the community.

Grill says it is now expected that there will be an increase in visibility, an improvement in service delivery as well as a greater focus on crime prevention.

“The community will see an improvement in response time to complaints.”
