Crack down on illegal firearm possession

Police have been called out to deal with several incidents of crime between Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 August.

On Sunday at 00:35 in Erica Way, Tafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain police attended to a complaint of fighting. On arrival, officers found a man lying in the road. Officers were informed that the victim was fighting with the suspect and the suspect took out a knife and stabbed him. The man sustained a stab wound to the chest and later died. The incident is under investigation.

On Saturday at 22:00 police received a complaint of an attempted murder in Cuckoo Street, Rocklands. Officers found two men lying in the road with gun shot wounds. A 26-year-old man sustained wounds to his right leg and the second victim, a 19-year-old man, had wounds to his right shoulder. Three 9mm live rounds and cartridges were found at the scene. No arrest has been made.

Also on Saturday at 18:45 police were doing patrols in Zebra Crescent, Beacon Valley, when officers saw two boys standing in the road. Police noticed that one of the boys was carrying a zip gun with 19 9mm bullets. The suspect told officers that the firearm did not belong to him. Legal procedures have been taken against the 13-year-old suspect.

At 00:35 police were doing patrols in Leadwood Street, Eastridge, when they noticed a group of men walking in an open field.

After spotting the police van, one of the men took out a pistol and threw it over the wall of one of the houses. An officer retrieved the firearm and found a 9mm Glock. A 26-year-old man was arrested for possession of the firearm.

In an unrelated incident on Saturday at 07:45 police received a complaint of a shooting at Leadwood Street. Police were informed that two armed men waiting the victim. When they saw him, they immediately started shooting at him. No injuries were sustained and the motive is suspected to be gang related. No arrests have been made.
