Cricket fest to welcome girls

2017-12-05 06:00

I applaud your publication for its focus and extensive media coverage of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign.

The City of Cape Town is also hosting the Basil D’Oliveira Youth School Cricket Festival at the Chukker Road sports complex in Kenwyn for aspiring young cricketers from the Cape Flats and surrounds. The organisers will definitely include young girls’ teams next year, as we strive for gender equity.

During my opening speech, I reminded the young boys of our responsibility as men to respect and treat women with utmost dignity. I stated that the scourge of drug abuse exacerbated violence against women and the most vulnerable in society.

Hopefully, our young cricketers would have assimilated the advice in preparation for the young women’s cricketers against whom they will compete equitably next year.
