Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith says he is deeply saddened by the deaths of two local crime fighters.

This comes after an officer at Steenberg Police Station was shot while chasing suspects in Lavender Hill last night (Monday 24 June). He died in hospital.

"The incident happened on the same night that I attended a gathering for the late Ignatius van Rooyen of the Milnerton Ridge Neighbourhood Watch (NW), who tragically lost his life this past weekend when he was shot by suspected hijackers while on patrol in Montague Gardens." says Smith.

He adds the incidents have contributed to other murders which has left the city "reeling."

Smith says: "Gang-related murders, in particular, constitute a serious emergency. In this regard, the City has called for an urgent meeting with the police and the Western Cape department of community safety. We will re-purpose all resources at our disposal to assist the police, particularly in known hot spots.

He says the City's NW support programme will do all it can to help Van Rooyen's family, with his memorial service to be held at Theo Marais Park in Tanzanite Street, Milnerton, at 13:00 on Thursday 27 June.

"While the police have yet to publicly confirm the identity of their fallen officer, I extend my condolences to his family, colleagues and friends and wish them strength during this very difficult time," concludes Smith.

Anyone with information can call the police on 0860 010111 or the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone, or 107 from a landline.
