Crime stats released

The national crime statistics for the period of April 2017 to March 2018 were released in Pretoria last week.

Contact crimes in the Manenberg precinct decreased slightly from 1596 to 1507 cases and in Lansdowne from 617 to 576 cases over the period. The crimes include murder, attempted murder, common assault, robbery with aggravating circumstances and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Sexual offences, which include rape and sexual assault, decreased from 133 to 112 cases in Manenberg and from 27 to 26 in Lansdowne.

Common robbery dropped in Manenberg from 570 to 512 cases and in Lansdowne from 194 to 142.

There has been a decrease in property-related crimes in Manenberg from 814 to 813 cases and in Lansdowne from 993 to 841. Cases include burglary at residential and non-residential premises, stock theft, car theft and theft out of cars.

Other serious crimes, which include shoplifting and commercial crime, decreased in Manenberg from 1237 to 1211 cases and increased in Lansdowne from 923 to 978 cases.

The total crime as detected from police action in the community decreased from 2791 to 2635 cases in Manenberg and from 631 to 529 cases in Lansdowne. The crimes in this category include drug-related crimes and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
